Who after a day at the beach has never brought home pounds of sand on them, in their clothes, bags or beach towels? Although part of the experience, sand can become a real nuisance.
Not to mention that every grain washed away contributes, even if minimally, to the degradation of the coastal environment: the sand is a living habitat, populated by microorganisms and is often home to eggs of sea turtles and other species.
Fortunately, there are simple tricks to keep it off unwanted surfaces and not take it home.
1. Using talcum powder
Talcum powder is a true ally against sand that sticks to the skin. Just apply enough of it to your feet and legs before putting your shoes back on, and it absorbs moisture, slipping away every grain of sand. Especially useful trick for those with children.
2. Use an anti-sand mat
Mats or beach towels made of tightly woven material or technical anti-sand fabric are designed to pass grains downward without causing them to rise up. Ideal for avoiding sand in your bag, among snacks, books and phones.
3. Carry a small brush with you
A clothes brush or clean makeup brush can be used to gently sweep sand away from bags, shoes and delicate items.
4. Waterproof bags and organizers
To protect electronic devices, keys, documents, and eyeglasses, use airtight pouches or waterproof cases. Even better if you can divide items into separate compartments inside the backpack. Less contact = less sand.
5. Change before getting into the car
Avoid entering the car with your costume still wet or sandy. Always carry spare clothes and an extra towel to dust yourself well.
6. Making use of mesh beach bags
Perforated or mesh bags allow sand to fall away naturally as you move around. This prevents it from accumulating and carrying it all the way home without realizing it.
7. Rinse off before leaving the beach.
Rinse feet and slippers well before leaving. Showers can be used if present, or water in a water bottle may be fine.
8. Do not shake cloths and clothes inside the house
Always shake towels, swimsuits and backpacks outside or directly at the beach before returning. A small measure that avoids finding sand in the house until Christmas.
With these simple tricks you can dramatically reduce the amount of sand that follows you off the beach. Less sand to clean = more time to relax and enjoy your vacation.
