With its endless miles of coastline facing three different seas, Italy offers seaside paradises of all kinds to beach lovers in each of its regions washed by the Mediterranean Sea.
The first major watershed in choosing one’s paradise spot by the sea concerns the type of beach: that is, sand or rock.
Below we describe some must-see Italian sandy beaches.
Beginning in Sardinia we find La Pelosa beach in Stintino.
A crescent of very fine white sand about 300 meters long that overlooks a shallow crystal clear sea where the silhouette of the island of Piana and the 16th-century watchtower, Torre della Pelosa, pop up on the horizon. Positioned on the northernmost tip of Sardinia, Stintino is among the most scenic coastal resorts on the island, and thanks to its shallow, clear waters you will feel as if you are diving into a huge saltwater pool.
Also in Sardinia, occupying a long stretch of coastline in the Baronie territory is Berchida beach.
Centuries-old junipers and Mediterranean scrub framing a crescent of talcum sand overlooking a turquoise sea. Behind the sandy shore is a small pond with a rather diverse fauna, while nearby the beach are the wonderful dunes of Capo Comino, s’Ena, sa Chitta and the Biderosa Oasis, where if you are lucky you may encounter pink flamingos.
On the southwestern coast of Sardinia, in the municipality of Teulada we find Tuerredda beach.
A wonderful white sandy beach over half a kilometer long and dotted with Mediterranean scrub. The beach is located between Capo Malfatano and Capo Spartivento, about 3 km from the beaches of Chia.
Moving on to Sicily, to the island of Lampedusa, we find Rabbit Beach.
Very fine sand overlooking a topaz-hued sea with shallow waters rich in fish and sea turtles. Rabbit Beach is a wonderful protected natural oasis that offers such a spectacle as to repay the arduous path to reach it.
Also in Sicily, near Trapani, we find the beach at San Vito Lo Capo.
A renowned white-sand seaside resort, thanks to its location at the foot of Mount Mònaco this emerald stretch of sea is sheltered from currents and its waters are among the warmest on the island.
We leave the Italian islands to land in Puglia, where we find the beach of Torre Dell’Orso.
Nestled between the imposing white stacks of the Two Sisters, with its white sand and crystal clear sea, Torre Dell’Orso is one of the most fascinating beaches on the Adriatic coast.
Another jewel of Puglia is the Alimini beach in Otranto.
Alimini Beach is located within an unspoiled nature reserve north of Otranto, Salento. A tongue of very fine sand that stretches for about 5 km of coastline with wide dunes, an evergreen pine forest and a transparent sea that in addition to relaxation offers the possibility of windsurfing thanks to the generous spaces and the unfailing winds.
Also in Apulia, you cannot miss Marina di Pescoluse: the Maldives of Salento.
A paradisiacal spectacle of fine white sand stretching for about 4 km of coastline with dunes and vegetation bathed by a crystal-clear sea with shallow waters from which scenic islets emerge: this is Marina di Pescoluse, known as the Maldives of Salento.
Moving to Campania, we find Baia Bianca in Camerota.
Along the coast of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park in the province of Salerno is a narrow strip of land at the foot of steep cliffs, the main locality of which is Marina di Camerota, home to the famous Baia Bianca, a white sandy beach washed by enchanting clear water.
Going up along the Tyrrhenian Sea we arrive in Tuscany, where we find Cala Violina.
Considered among the most picturesque beaches in the entire Maremma thanks to its secluded location behind the Bandite di Scarlino Nature Reserve reachable only on foot, its green woods, turquoise sea and white sand, Cala Violina offers an extremely impressive view.
It is also said that walking on this Tuscan beach produces a sound reminiscent of a violin–try it to believe it.
